Northern Ireland tender process 'is flawed'

The British Generic Manufacturers Association (BGMA) has spoken out against the much-criticised centralised tendering system currently being introduced in Northern Ireland.

According to the association, rising costs may lead to many patients going without their usual medicines, reports Chemist and Druggist.

BGMA chair Kim Innes said attempts to arrange a meeting with health minister Michael McGimpsey, geared at reducing costs, had failed.

She added: "Our requests have been refused, whilst the department presses ahead with its own unworkable plans."

Meanwhile, leading generic pharmaceutical firm Actavis has announced its withdrawal from the bidding process.

The firm told the news provider that the tendering system had been introduced without the necessary consultation with those with supply interests.

Echoing the BGMA statement, Actavis commercial director Michael Cann commented that the proposed tender risked disrupting the supply chain, meaning many patients may not be able to access the drugs they need.
